This gold calculator works out what your gold is worth for its karat, what making charges add when you buy, and whether zakat is due. It takes tola, masha and ratti as well as grams. The live spot price shows the world market rate in US dollars; for your own gold, use the rate your jeweler or local market quotes today.

The world market (spot) price of pure 24K gold, in US dollars.
The live price is unavailable right now. The calculator below still works with the rate you type.
A jeweler’s or local market’s rate can differ: local prices, karat and making charges all change what you pay or are offered. Prices from gold-api.com, chart from MetalCharts, so the two can differ slightly.

Zakat on Your Gold
Add each piece you own. This uses today’s rate from the first card.
Scholars differ on both. The Hanafi school counts jewelry you wear; the Maliki, Shafi’i and Hanbali schools do not. Ask your scholar which applies to you.

Zakat is due once your gold has stayed at or above the nisab for one lunar year. Pieces of 18K to 24K count at their full weight, as in the Hanafi view. Other wealth, such as cash and savings, counts too; this covers gold only.
Key Takeaways
- One tola is 11.6638 grams, and it divides into 12 masha or 96 ratti.
- Karat is parts of 24: 22K gold is 22 parts gold in 24, about 91.7% gold.
- Online gold prices are for one troy ounce (31.1035 g) of pure gold. A local rate is often quoted per tola, per 10 grams or per gram instead.
- Zakat on gold is 2.5%, once the gold you own reaches the nisab and you have held it for a lunar year.
- The nisab is 87.48 g (7.5 tola) by one common conversion and 85 g by another, and scholars differ on whether jewelry you wear counts.
How Many Grams Are in a Tola?
A tola is a traditional weight for gold and silver, set at 180 grains, which is 11.6638 grams. It divides into 12 masha, and each masha into 8 ratti, so a piece weighed as 2 tola 4 masha is 2 tola plus a third of a tola.
| Unit | Grams |
|---|---|
| 1 tola (12 masha, 96 ratti) | 11.6638 |
| 1 masha (8 ratti) | 0.9720 |
| 1 ratti | 0.1215 |
| 1 troy ounce | 31.1035 |
One tola is 0.375 of a troy ounce, the unit that online spot prices use.
What Do 24K, 22K, 21K and 18K Mean?
Karat measures how much of a piece is gold, in parts of 24. 24K is pure gold, 22K is 22 parts gold in 24 (91.7%), 21K is 87.5% and 18K is 75%. The rest is other metals, which make the piece harder.
The calculator scales a 24K rate by karat ÷ 24, so treat its answer for other karats as an estimate. If your market quotes its own 22K rate, choose 22K under “Rate is for” and the calculator uses that rate directly.
How Is Zakat on Gold Worked Out?
Zakat on gold is 2.5% of its value, due once all the gold you own reaches the nisab and has been held for one lunar year. The nisab is 20 mithqal of gold: 87.48 g (7.5 tola) by one common conversion, or 85 g by another.
Scholars differ on two points, and the calculator lets you choose both: which nisab figure to use, and whether jewelry you wear regularly counts. The Hanafi school counts it; the Maliki, Shafi’i and Hanbali schools do not.
In the Hanafi view, a piece that is more than half gold counts at its full weight, and zakat is paid on its market value. Zakat also applies to other wealth, such as cash and savings. This calculator covers gold only, so ask your scholar for the full picture.
Why Does the Online Gold Price Differ From Your Jeweler’s Rate?
Sites such as goldprice.org show the spot price: what one troy ounce (31.1035 g) of pure gold trades for on the international market, in the currency you pick. Your jeweler quotes a local rate instead, often per tola, per 10 grams or per gram.
To compare the two, convert the unit (one tola is 0.375 of a troy ounce) and the currency. Jewelry then adds making charges, and when you sell, the buyer may deduct a charge.
FAQs
How many grams is 1 tola of gold?
11.6638 grams, often rounded to 11.66 g.
How much zakat is due on 1 tola of gold?
On its own, none: 1 tola is below the nisab of 7.5 tola. If all your gold reaches the nisab and you have held it for a lunar year, zakat is 2.5% of its value, the same as 0.025 tola for every tola you own.
Does the calculator use live gold prices?
The box at the top shows the live spot price of pure gold in US dollars, from gold-api.com, refreshed every minute. It is the world market price, not a shop’s rate, so the calculator works from the rate you type. Your browser asks gold-api.com only for the price: nothing you type is sent anywhere or saved.
Why does jewelry cost more than its gold value?
Jewelry carries making charges for the work, often quoted as a percentage or as an amount per gram or per tola. Enter them as a percentage or per gram; to turn a per-tola charge into a per-gram one, divide it by 11.6638.
